Sixteens year ago on 8th of January 2004 a bus travelling from Bhakkar, 7 km east of there, to nearby chati khokha fell into the canal after its front axle broke. Army and police divers recovered dead bodies from the canal, raising the death toll in one of Pakistan’s worst bus crashes to 62.
A three-day mourning period was declared in the area. Most of the victims were students who were returning home from their schools and colleges in Bhakkar. Dozen of people had crowded the bus and traveled without getting seats. “It was one of the worst bus accidents. Hundreds of people spent the night at the crash site in cold weather in the hope of finding the bodies of the missing children and other relatives. An angry mob demonstrating against local transport companies blocked the main road for several hours.
Prime Minister Zafarullah Jamali expressed shock and grief over the accident and extended his sympathies to the bereaved families.
Fatal bus crashes are relatively common in Pakistan but rarely does the toll climb this high.
